Head out to Takapuna Beach Reserve with the family this Christmas Day to see a scene from Bruce Mason’s End of the Golden Weather performed free to the public. This annual event is fast becoming an Auckland Christmas tradition.

End of the Golden Weather is set at Te Parenga beach in the 1930s, where two boys experience the excitement of Christmas day. It explores the exhilaration and apprehension as they wait for the day, the church service, present-giving and Christmas dinner.

The Reserve is the perfect setting for the event, as the fictional Te Parenga beach – where the play is set – is accepted to actually be Takapuna Beach. It’s also a fitting commemoration to the play’s author, Bruce Mason, who grew up in the area. Actor Stephen Lovatt will again perform the narrative piece solo.

Thanks in part to the support from Auckland Council, End of the Golden Weather will again be performed free. However, donations can be made at the event and gifted to Lovatt's charity of choice, Oxfam.

If weather conditions are unfavourable, the scene will be performed in the nearby War Memorial community hall on The Strand, near the Takapuna Library.
