Following on from the success of the arts event The Fifth Plinth in Western Park last year, the Uptown Arts Trust is hosting The Sixth Plinth in inner city Myers Park. The event is modelled on Antony Gormely’s One & Other art project which was held in Trafalgar Square in 2009, which provided a platform for creative talent to show what they could do in front of an audience perched on the Square’s empty fourth plinth for an hour.

The Sixth Plinth is offering individuals or groups the opportunity to perform, dance, paint, read aloud or generally entertain onlookers for the lesser time of 15 minutes amid the leafy environs of Myers Park adjacent to the children’s playground – an opportunity which was taken up eagerly by around 25 Aucklanders last March and enjoyed by approximately 200 spectators. Stand out performances at The Fifth Plinth included electronic music played without hands and dance sculpture performed by dancers in white lab coats.

The event is an initiative introduced to Auckland by the Uptown Arts Trust, a trust formed with the aim of promoting the creative endeavours of artists residing on the CBD’s western fringe including Ponsonby, Grey Lynn and K’ Road - and is sponsored by Creative Communities.
