Influenced by all genres of jazz, Latin & blues, the band add their own flavour and original arrangements to the great American Songbook of jazz standards. The band formed seven years ago, performing in four Nelson Jazz Festivals and many venues around town. It has had a few membership changes over the years and is currently a six-piece featuring a two front-line sax section and female vocalist.

Johnny Morris (keyboard/vocals): Influenced by the brilliant improvisational skills of the late Oscar Petersen and the swinging vocals of Bobby Darin and Michael Buble. Johnny has enjoyed a varied musical career both locally and overseas, and toured extensively with the Jack May Big Band in the UK prior to arriving in NZ in 1969, where he featured prominently on the jazz scene in Auckland before coming to Nelson in 2002.

Paul Morris (drums): Inspired by many great drummers, especially Jeff Hamilton and Clayton Cameron, Paul has a varied background in drum styles and whilst on his OE in UK in the 1990s he played the club scene with covers bands, also doing some recording work. Paul has been with Freewheelin’ with Dad, Johnny, since its inception in 2003.

Paul Johnston (bass): Also an original member of Freewheelin’, Paul is a keen pianist, songwriter and arranger, recording his own original compositions, as well as other artists in his home studio, Studio 2 in Nelson. Freewheelin' recorded two albums in 2005 & 2007. Paul was a member of the Nelson Jazz Band Jada which formed from the Jazz Club workshops in early 2002.

Annabel Boyes (tenor/baritone sax) - Studying under Stu Buchanan in Christchurch, Annabel played for the Garden City Big Band, also performing in Australia & the UK. She is a member of the Nelson Big Band and is an avid contemporary jazz fan. Her forte is formulating the arrangements for Freehweelin’s front-line in conjunction with Andrew Leachman. She joined the band in 2008.

Andrew Leachman (tenor/baritone sax): The most recent addition to Freewheelin', Andrew is an avid CD collector, inspired by the likes of Roland Kirk, Hank Mobley, Miles Davies and Coltrane. Not unlike other members of the band, he has performed internationally at Mecca ballrooms and clubs overseas. He was a founder member of the Nelson Jazz Club and Big Band, playing for many years with Al Leonard’s Band in Nelson.

Rachel Fallows (vocals): Began singing in choirs at school & university. Influenced over the years by Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Diana Krall & more recently Madeleine Peroux. She only began singing jazz with the reception band at her own wedding as a surprise for her husband. This led to her performing as Rachel & the Soulmates in the 2009 Nelson Jazz Festival. Rachel joined Freewheelin' in February 2009. Rachel’s bluesy smooth voice adds a new groove and dimension to the band. Her infectious personality and passion to sing from from deep within her soul generates a perfect audience experience. She is enjoying the challenge of singing with a five-piece band & being part of the Freewheelin’ Team.
