Mulled Wine Concerts and a special link to Paekakariki.

A unique link between a village on the Kapiti Coast and New Zealand's premier composer Douglas Lilburn will be celebrated on 7 August 2011. Donald Armstrong is the Associate Concertmaster of the NZSO. Donald likes speedy high risk pursuits such as ski-ing, fast power boats, sail boats and land yachts, catching incredibly big fish (well, trying to), and sitting at the front of the NZSO keeping up with volatile conductors. He is very busy performing, teaching, conducting, playing chamber music, and continues his quest for the wild wacky and wonderful in music. Together with Mary Gow, who is taking a break from organising the Mulled Wine Concerts and this time playing in one, they will present a rare performance of Lilburn's “Violin and Piano Sonata in B minor”, in Paekakariki's Memorial Hall. This performance will commemorate the 10th year since Lilburn's death.

Douglas Lilburn (1915- 2001) is widely regarded as "The Father of New Zealand Composition". A one-time resident of Ames Street in Paekakariki, where this sonata was composed, Lilburn felt a great affinity for the Kapiti Coast and over a four-year period of residence, spent much time in Paekakariki, valuing the solitude and uninterrupted views from his beach house.

As Mary Gow says, “Ever since I was a student, I have loved Lilburn's music and when I am abroad, I play his music in public at every possible opportunity. Now I too live in Ames Street and look at the same view every day. It seems fitting to celebrate this outstanding composition in the place where it was created and which he loved so much”.

Donald Armstrong was Music Director of the NZ Chamber Orchestra from 1987 to 2004. He has appeared as soloist with the NZSO and made frequent solo appearances with the NZ Chamber Orchestra. In the second half of the concert, Donald will partner Sarah Watkins, the brilliant pianist from the NZTrio to present Beethoven's “Spring Sonata” and Gabriel Fauré's richly romantic “Sonata in A”. Sarah holds both a Doctor of Musical Arts and Masters in collaborative piano from the Juilliard School in New York City, and a Bachelors from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand.

Paekakariki's Memorial Hall is located right on the sea-front in The Parade and looks out to the beach and Kapiti Island. With assistance from the Piano House in Wellington and Munros Transport, the local businesses and Community Board and other sponsors, Mulled Wine Concerts present a yearly winter concert series in the hall. This concert will represent the finale of the 2011 season. A further series of five concerts is planned for 2012 – starting with a special jazz-blues fundraiser. Look for announcements!
