Evocative ancient melodies and jazz-infused world music.

Carolina Moon are back at CJC with a monster line-up at the start of their national release tour - performing evocative medieval world songs from their new CD Mother Tongue, and modern jazz pieces from composers such as Kenny Wheeler, Mike Nock, Jan Garbarek.

At the heart of Mother Tongue, lie the haunting melodies of medieval Judeo-Spain. For almost 1000 years these songs have been borne by generations of mothers, lovers and daughters of the Diaspora, unfolding the story of a vibrant people through romances, life, love and loss. Sung in their ‘mother tongue’ Ladino, these songs are rooted in traditions, rituals and community, and are imbued with a potency that has echoed through the ages.

The core of the songs were composed in the Golden Age of Spain (1100-1492), a period of great inter-cultural exchange and peace between Christian, Moslem and Jewish cultures who inspired each other to new heights of expression and excellence. They are performed by Carolina Moon and Ensemble in the same spirit, with representatives from Sephardic, Western and New Zealand cultures.

Vocalist Carolina Moon heads this project which she began in a collaborative performance with Mark Isaacs at the Great Synagogue, Sydney 2002. The NZ ensemble was formed in 2008 to explore medieval world song within the context of a modern improvising group. Their interpretations remain true to the spirit of this beautiful music whilst bringing it into the present day.

Carolina’s vocal weaves Eastern and Western blends into a passionate program of exquisite melodies, charismatic klezmer feels and flamenco grooves, amid songs drawn from the surrounding tide of musical inspirations.

Featured act 8pm-10pm, followed by jazz jam session from 10pm-12am.
