Globe-trotter Maggie Counihan, who at 60 strapped on a backpack and set off to India with no real plans, talks about her new book 'Backpacking to Freedom: Solo at Sixty' which tells of her amazing adventures in 40 countries.

In 1997, 60-year-old Maggie Counihan had a yearn to travel to India so strapped her backpack on and set off. She had no concrete travel plans, no email or computer skills, only a passport and her trusty Lonely Planet guide, heaps of optimism and a wide smile.

After 10 years of travelling, Maggie’s still globe-trotting and says that travelling solo is the most liberating experience ever. And that is the essence of her new book, Backpacking to Freedom: Solo at Sixty.

Backpacking tells of her life in South East Asia and the 40 countries she visited including a six-day Trans-Mongolia train journey from Beijing to St Petersburg.

The book will be available for purchase after the talk.
