Her Business host: Kim Hutchison and Chloe Boerema

Keynote speaker: Karen Fistonich

Topic: 'Growing up in NZ's First Family of Wine'

Villa Maria is New Zealand’s only remaining family owned winery of its size. Enjoy a rare glimpse of this uniquely Kiwi, internationally successful business and the family who live the dream.

Karen Fistonich is the Chairperson of the Villa Maria Estate Board and has served on the Board of Directors for more 15 years, following a successful career in international banking with ANZ.

Being born into a Croatian family, wine has been in her blood from a young age. As a teenager Karen started to show an interest in the family business and worked in the Villa Maria wine shop whilst studying towards her Bachelor of Arts Degree (Psychology) at The University of Auckland.

During her mid twenties, Karen worked a vintage at various Château owned or managed by the renowned French wine merchants, Etablissements Jean-Pierre Moueix.

During Karen’s tenure on the Villa Maria Board of Directors she has been involved in the development of two specialist vineyard companies and the development of the new Auckland Winery, which opened in 2005.

Karen describes the role of the Board today as more governance orientated than project delivery, but is proud of the fact that when the company required hands-on leadership the board rolled up their sleeves to do just that.

Karen is married to Milan Brajkovich, Vineyard Director at Kumeu River Wines. They live on the Kumeu River Vineyard with their two children, Matthew and Anna.
