Pencarrow Lighthouse in Wellington was New Zealand’s first permanent lighthouse, which shone for the first time in January 1859 and since then has become an icon of Wellington Harbour.

Normally, visitors to the lighthouse have to walk or cycle 8km from Eastbourne and can only view from the outside, but to celebrate Wellington Anniversary Day, the NZ Historic Places Trust is opening the lighthouse, and has arranged a coach visit for visitors. Staff will be available to talk about the lighthouse and its history. The coach will pick up from Wellington and Petone.

The trip will take place on Saturday 22nd January 2011 (postponement day of Sun 23rd Jan for bad weather). Please note that there is a 15-20 minute walk up a steep path to the lighthouse, so is not suitable for people with a mobility disability. The cost is $20, pay in advance.
