The Waikanae Music Society is holding a Gala Piano Recital to be given by NZ's most distinguished pianist Michael Houstoun. The concert is to celebrate the arrival of the society's new Fazioli 228 Grand Piano which has just arrived from Italy.

The programme has been chosen to showcase the piano's qualities and also has a touch of Italian flavour as a tribute to the piano's country of origin. It will open with Bach's Italian Concerto, followed by Schumanns' Kreisleriana. A Sonata by Kapustin adds a bit of novelty as this Ukrainian composer uses jazz influences in a classical structure. The remainder of the programme is devoted to the music of Liszt and in particular the music that was inspired by his travels in Italy - the three Petrarch Sonnets and Les jeux d'eau à la Villa d'Este which paints a musical portrait of the famous fountains in Tivoli.
