Wellington City Council’s free series of outdoor gigs kicks off again at the Botanic Garden’s Soundshell.

The City Council’s Community Events Manager, Rebecca Hardie, says she’s confident there’s something on the menu that everyone will like.

“As usual, there’s lots of soul and jazz, but we’ve got an increase in singer-songwriters and folk or country acts – definitely a sign of the times,” says Rebecca.

“Whatever you’re into, we’ve got a whole lot of sultry vocals, lap-slide guitar, brass and beats to keep you swaying, tapping or dancing your way through January.”

There’s a change to this year’s schedule – instead of putting on gigs for 21 consecutive nights, it was decided to reserve Mondays and Tuesdays in case any concerts are postponed due to bad weather.

“Last year, it was very disappointing for both bands and audiences alike when we had to cancel several events because of rain. Hopefully this way, we’ll avoid cancellations,” says Rebecca.

“We’re putting on double gigs at the weekends. That way we’re showcasing the same amount of acts as any other year.

“And if we don’t have to reschedule any gigs to a Monday or Tuesday, that’s your chance to head along to the Soundshell and explore the stunning lighting in a quieter setting.”

For the past 12 years, the area surrounding the Soundshell has been exquisitely lit by local lighting artist, Mike Farrand. It is now a staple part of the much-loved concert series.

Exact dates and times for gigs are available in Summer City brochures and also on the Council website, Wellington.govt.nz

Brochures can be found in stands around town and also at Council libraries, swimming pools and recreation centres.
