Michael Houstoun is New Zealand's foremost pianist and has appeared in Paekakariki on previous occasions, always to a rapturous reception. This time he will present a full solo programme devoted to the works of Franz Schubert, including the “Sonata in G”, D.894, “Drei Klavierstücke”, D.946 and the beautiful “Sonata in B flat”, D.960.

Mulled Wine organiser Mary Gow is thrilled to be able to present Michael Houstoun once again. “Michael is a real crowd-pleaser,” she said. “His last concert was a sell-out and his playing was fantastic”.

Describing himself as a “very poor student”, both at school and university, Michael Houstoun nevertheless managed to walk off with third place in the 1973 Van Cliburn Piano Competition at the age of 21, which established him as a pianist of world standard. In his maturity, he adopts an almost mystical approach to his playing, immersing himself in the music to such an extent that, as he says, “it is a question of listening with the utmost openness, of giving your entire being to the music at hand, of following your instinct where it may lead, of persisting when all inroads seem to be blocked”.

The Paekakariki Memorial Hall is an ideal venue for chamber music. Its sea-front location gives stunning views across to the mysterious and magical Kapiti Island and its natural wood panelling lends brightness to the acoustics even when the hall is full of people. Departing from the conventional layout, for the Mulled Wine concert the piano is placed on the floor of the hall in the centre, which means that no-one is more than a few rows away from the performer. To be seated this close to a genius like Houstoun in full flight is a listening experience to remember.

In addition to the music, the Mulled Wine concerts have become known as a venue where local artists have an opportunity to display their work. The works displayed will come from the Artel Gallery collection, Ronda Thompson and Maude Heath.

And the village of Paekakariki itself is well worth a visit. Many people appreciate the opportunity to walk on the beach, wine and dine (or just enjoy a cup of excellent coffee) in one of the local cafes and restaurants and then listen to some fine music. One word of warning however: if you want to see this concert, reserve your ticket early, as the tickets will sell out fast!
