Frizzell's paintings are filled with loaded images that take on unusual, original and often sharply critical meanings because of the way he treats them. He has a critical and often witty take on art and the world and his work tends to deal with the conventions of representation. He pastiches labels and uses comic book figures for his imagery reflecting his early exposure to commercial advertising.

Frizzell’s art is humorous yet sensitive and respectful, with a love for the advertisements, billboards and posters from the 1950s and 1960s, such as the Four Square Man. With his tiki paintings, Frizzell had the audacity to take motifs from Maori art and use them in a playful yet provocative manner. This said, no one could deny Frizzell’s skill at working up a surface or a background to his paintings often presenting an intoxicating contrast to his choice of subject matter.
