Farcical fun at Repertory.

Following on from the success of Abigail’s Party, Repertory’s next presentation brings together the same production team to stage the much-loved farce Habeas Corpus by veteran English playwright Alan Bennett (author of Talking Heads, A Private Function and The History Boys).

With its literal Latin translation being ‘you may have the body’ this clever play very much revolves around those two forbidden themes beloved of popular farceurs: namely sex and death (although this play concentrates more on the former!).

Written and first staged in 1973, this glorious fast-paced comedy is a very clever send-up of the traditional British farce (and other theatrical genres) and is packed with a fabulous array of stock-in-trade characters from quick-witted char woman to lascivious vicar.

Designed and directed by Mark Rayner, Habeas Corpus has a wonderfully convoluted plot following the exploits of the seemingly upstanding Wicksteed family, residents of a well-heeled British seaside town, with the action of the play following the mix-ups, misunderstandings and mistaken identities that occur when three strangers come into their midst – with one of them set on revenge. Long-held secrets, hidden desires, forbidden liaisons and a decent dose of double entendre makes for another great night’s entertainment at Repertory.

Habeas Corpus runs at Repertory for seven performances from July 29th.
