The growing knowledge of how differences in our individual DNA affects our chances of developing disease is on the cusp of transforming healthcare and medicine. New cancer treatments, tests for drug side effects, truly personalised medicine and the mitigation of illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes are on the horizon.

The 2011 Sir Neil Waters Distinguished Lecture entitled 'The Genetic Revolution: Opportunities and Challenges' is presented by Professor Peter Donnelly FRS, FMedSci, University of Oxford. It is aimed at a non-specialised audience giving a sense of recent progress in human genetics, and the opportunities and challenges it offers for medicine and society. The lecture will be followed by a panel discussion.
