Matariki has always been an important part of the Māori calendar. The pre-dawn rising of the star cluster Matariki is referred to as 'Te Tau Hou', the New Year.

During Matariki we celebrate our unique place in the world. We give respect to the land on which we live, and admiration to our mother earth, Papatūānuku. It’s a time of change. It’s a time of preparation, and a time of action. During Matariki we acknowledge what we have and what we have to give and what has been lost along the way.

Matariki celebrates the diversity of life. It’s a celebration of culture, language, spirit, but most of all, people.

Eltoro & Associates aim to give you the opportunity to experience Māori culture and customs in a friendly, warm and welcoming environment. Our experienced facilitator and events team are committed to ensure that you develop and experience a better understanding of the Māori culture through the celebration of
Matariki and good food.

You will enjoy an array of good eating, learn about Maori customs, and have some hands on experiences with flax. All this will be presented in a relaxing, fun, non-threatening environment. If you have ever wondered what is on the other side of the fence but never had the chance (for whatever reason), this is the perfect opportunity for you.

For professionals in high-stress management jobs this would be a great opportunity to step outside your vigorous routine and let your hair down for a bit of 'R & R' or mirimiri.

All participants will gain, learn and experience:

- A Māori Welcome onto our marae (powhiri)

- A brief history of our marae and its basic functions

- Stimulate your taste buds with a contemporary presentation of traditional Māori food i.e.: tempura kumara wedges with a watercress aioli dip, toasted rewana topped with smoked tuna in white sauce, seafood and much much more...

- Māori culture and customs (The do’s and don’ts when engaging with Māori)

- Power point workshop about Matariki – The Māori New Year, Māori legend and Matariki, Meaning of the stars, How to spot Matariki

- Basic Māori phrases that form the basis of the Māori language

- Participate in Māori activities (Māori traditional games, weaving etc)

Program ideal for learners of the Māori language or other ethnic groups wanting to learn more about Māori culture and Matariki – everyone welcome – nau mai, haere mai.

Our facilitator is also a professional development program facilitator for a local tertiary institute.

We also offer workshops in other areas such as:
- Leadership mentoring
- The implementation of the Maori language into your organisation
- The principles of the Treaty of Waitangi
- Marae-based events
- Traditional Maori games and programs
- Our associates also provide services in catering, Maori carving and tattooing
