Te Kōkī, the New Zealand School of Music presents the second of our five Friday at 5 concerts for 2011.

This concert commemorates the 10th anniversary of Lilburn's death on June 6, 2001 by focusing on some of his string chamber works for four, three and two performers.

Lilburn's String Quartet will be performed by NZSM Head of Strings Martin Riseley and DMA candidate Jun He on violins, Professor Donald Maurice (viola) and the newly appointed cello lecturer Inbal Megiddo (cello). The three NZSM staff will remain to perform Lilburn's String Trio and then Martin Riseley (violin) and Jian Liu (piano), our new NZSM piano teacher will play the Lilburn Violin Sonata.

Douglas Lilburn is widely regarded as the most influential composer in the young history of New Zealand music. He had a long association with the School of Music at Victoria University Wellington – now the New Zealand School of Music in a joint venture with Massey University. His support for New Zealand music endures through many generous grants made by the Lilburn Trust to composers, performers and music organisations throughout the country. His former home in Kelburn is now owned and administered by the Lilburn Residence Trust and is most often the physical residence of the annual Jack C Richards/CNZ Composer in Residence at NZSM.

The Friday at 5 series are concerts in which the NZSM comes 'downtown' sharing with Wellington audiences music which reaches out and connects us to our past, future, other cultures and to each other. The concerts all feature the extraordinary talent of NZSM staff, students and friends.

The other Friday at 5 concerts in 2011 are on July 15, September 9 and October 7.
