Laura Collins and the Back Porch Band will be delivering their blend of acoustic ballads and blues. This is a sweet blend of blues and twang, sass and yeehah, Laura's originals and favourite covers with their roots in the southern states of USA - e.g. John Hiatt, Lyle Lovett, Gillian Welch and Blues spanning John Lee Hooker to Koko Taylor and Keb Mo. If you like the mix of blues and a little country you are likely to hear from Bonnie Raitt, then you'll enjoy a night with Laura Collins and the Back Porch Band.

Listen / watch them on Youtube:

Laura, based in Wellington, has performed in Nelson on several occasions with her rollicking blues band Mojo Mama, as part of the Blue Hearts and Fallen Angels tour with Wayne Mason and at the Winter Festival as stand-in for Marg Layton, who was a sick, which Laura describes as “a whirlwind of a day being the 'emergency blues singer'!”

This band has a relaxed, warm acoustic sound with upright bass, acoustic guitars, Weissenborn slide guitar, mandolin, snare and accordion. You’ll feel like you’re hanging with them in the lounge or cruising in the sun on the back porch. Of course with Laura in the mix there will always be an emphasis on entertainment.

These Back Porch Boys are all journeymen who have played many juke joints in their time, George Barris, a seasoned bass man whose early fame dates back to the days of “Highway” and Matt Newman, originally from Portland Oregon, who brings a wealth of experience and great country-blues pickin’, Al Norman (ex-Warratahs, now working with Darren Watson and the Real Deal Blues Band) and Paddy Burgin (singer/songwriter who has made numerous albums solo and with his own line-ups, ‘The Wooden Box Band’ and ‘The Dunstan Rangers’.
Ballads and Blues from the Back Porch with Laura Collins and her band, Friday October 28th at the Boathouse, expect heart, sass and fine pickin’. Show starts 8.00pm, $15 cover on door.
