Herakles, hero of ancient Greek myth, is cast as a New Zealand colonist attempting to claim and tame the land in this series of lithographs and etchings by Christchurch print maker Marian Maguire. Scenes from New Zealand’s history are played out by figures rendered in the style of black-figure vase painting practised in Athens in 550-500 BC and reworked from an 1820s French drawing of a Māori chief. A late 6th century BC amphora, painted with black-figure scenes of Herakles battling the Amazons, is a feature of the exhibition in support of Maguire’s prints.
