At times when it's essential to communicate quickly, social media has shown it can become a vital lifeline.

The Christchurch earthquake demonstrated how traditional methods of communicating essential information may not be enough - and how social media channels have fundamentally changed the way our leading brands are communicating.

At our next Brainy Breakfast you'll hear from two of our leading corporates as they describe how they used social media channels to engage with their customers, staff and the community during the earthquake crisis. They'll share anecdotes, learnings and tips on how Kiwi organisations can best embrace social media in critical times.

Erica Lloyd, External Relations Manager for the Bank of New Zealand, will talk about how social media quickly became a focal point for BNZ's earthquake communications. Facebook and Twitter played an important role in helping locate some of the 500 BNZ staff members in the area while other channels were used to help share live news of the bank's operational infrastructure and share staff and customer stories.

Richard Irvine, Telecom's Online Community Communications Manager, will share examples of Telecom's response and support online after the 22 February quake, and talk about the advantages of embedding social media in crisis communication.

An earthquake is an extreme event. However the key learnings our speakers will share with you can be applied to any business or social crisis situation.

How would your digital strategy hold up in a crisis?
