Neville Smitheram is best known in the Manawatu for his paintings which graced the walls of Barrista Cafe on George Street for many years until the cafe changed hands in 2009.

Smitheram graduated from Elam School of Fine Arts in 1984 and exhibited extensively in Auckland before making a return to his home town of Levin where he lives and works in a large studio space in the semi-industrial part of town.

Smitheram's artworks are intuitive and light, like a form of Zen meditation. "People say, what are you thinking about when you paint? The answer is nothing... if things are going well, nothing. It's actually really hard to do".
