Roy Good: Lintel Series
Exhibition dates: 4 - 28 May
“These aren't paintings. These are designs and they shouldn't be in an art gallery!” declared Hamish Keith in a 1969 review of an exhibition of Roy Good's geometric, abstract-shaped paintings at Barry Lett Gallery. Unlike the contemporary regionalism of Don Binney, Good had no interest in paintings that interpreted or represented the real world. His work had its origin in international arts practice and Russian artists such as Kasimir Malevich and Vladimir Tatlin and the pure abstraction of Piet Mondrian, Max Bell and Frank Stella.

The reality of Good's minimalist work resided in the experience of paintings that operated within their own laws of colour, space, shape and form and their ability to charm and challenge the viewer with their very existence as objects of contemplation.

John Yardley: Recent Watercolours
Exhibition from 14 April
John Yardley is recognised as one of Britain's finest watercolourists. Born in Beverley, Yorkshire he commenced painting full-time in 1986. Having had no formal training, Yardley maintains that this has given him the freedom to find his own style.

Yardley's increasing prominence in the world of watercolours is the result of his natural ability and flair. He is renowned for his outstanding ability to capture the vitality of a scene with a few well-placed brushstrokes and the way he conveys movement with a confident sweep of paint. His characteristic style is to paint what he sees with little embellishment and by drawing his subject and then painting it in one quick and direct application, he retains the sense of movement that is true to the scene and medium.

Damien Kurth: Dissolution
Exhibition dates: 3 May - 15 May
Damien Kurth's paintings explore modes of visual perception and interpretation, drawing on traditional painting practices to defy accepted conventions of the still life. Rejecting the stereotypical subject matter, images and iconography of the European still life, Kurth takes a counter-historical approach to the social and cultural parameters of still life painting.
