About Time is a for-real jazz trio playing Northland's cruisiest New York-style jazz, from Chick Corea to Bill Evans and the like.

Check out May/June issue of NZ Life & Leisure pg 138 for our photo in the groovy historic Butter Factory, the classy downstairs venue of the historical brick heritage building. Upper floors enter on Bank Street. The jazz gig is on Farmer's parking lot level.

Meet the band - we all are jazz inspired family guys from near Whangarei with years of passion for interesting jazz - I'm Matt Hennessy, a true jazz drummer (soft boom and bash); Matt Watson is accomplished on both acoustic and electronic and also keyboards, trumpet, flugelhorn. To keep it all together is John Fraser on electric and stand up bass. Yes, we all work in tech by day so playing music is a creative break.

We play a wide range of jazz. We put some very rough cut homemade video on YouTube to show our range of sophisticated yet cruisey jazz. Forgive the quality but you'll get the idea we play standards, swing, Latin, funk, bebop, Coltrane, Davis, Corea, Evans and between. www.youtube.com/jazztrionz

Here's a review of our 7 May gig written for the Northland Jazz Society secretary Maurice Lloyd:

About Time Jazz Trio at The Butter Factory:
On the 9th of April, I went to the Butter Factory bar in Whangarei to listen to a new group called About Time. There had been some publicity about the event in the local papers, so I thought I'd go along. The bar is an excellent venue, with a great selection of wines and other drinks, and some food platters if you want to eat.

I arrived just before 6pm when the band was due to start. I found the audience to be a mix with some younger people, but quite a few older people as well. During the course of the evening, people came and went, but it was never crowded, with seats being available most of the time.

The band was great. Consisting of trumpet, bass and drums, you could either sit and listen to them as I did, or have them as background to your conversation, as most others did. They played a mix of older standards and newer numbers. The atmosphere was great. My idea of a night club you used to see in the movies. I can thoroughly recommend the group and the venue.

You can become a fan (click Like button) on our Facebook page - About Time Jazz Trio. You'll hear about what we are up to between gigs like working on our 3 CD release from Tulip Room Studio. Recording was in response to request from gig fans to 'take us home'.
