An explosive cocktail in an acoustic mould.

Serving as an improvisatory vehicle for all 4 members of this brand new Haines led line-up, The Fourtet brings together jazz stalwarts Haines and Field - who have been playing and writing together since the heady days of the late 1980s - with a newer, fresher and some would say greener rhythm section of Botting and Koetsier.

Marking a departure from Haines's previous line-ups, this band is of the acoustic mould, meaning apart from microphones, these guys are as old school as you can get, with upright bass, grand piano, drums and of course Haines at the helm on saxes and flutes.

With a renewed vigour and purpose, Haines has been deep in the shed for the last three months after a one month sabbatical in France where he finally grappled with some of the 'bigger' musical ideas that had been eluding him for decades. That coupled with a lovely 1963 Selmer Mk IV, bought from Brian Smith no-less, has led Haines down the path of assembling a band where anything can happen, and indeed will happen. This ethos, as well as the fourth stream musical ideas of "Professor" Kevin Field, means an explosive cocktail is ready ignite at our own CJC.

"I have been writing things for us to really blow over, to go out and perhaps return, or perhaps not. This has been a long time coming, and so far it's a very exciting place for us to be."

Haines plans to take the band into York St Studios very soon after these recordings, to record in a fastidiously analogue fashion.

"As far as I see it, recording technology has got worse not better in the last 40 years. We will be using all the vintage Neumann mics, and we will record straight to tape. It won't make us play better, but it will make us sound better".

Haines also plans to record the gig on November 23, once again straight to reel to reel tape in the tradition of the best live recordings.

"There's nothing wrong with valve distortion, and believe us, we will be redlining the meters!"
