The traditional nature of the rural sports of wood chopping, sheep dog trialing and shearing have a long history in this country and are strong in the hearts and minds of many New Zealanders.

The Cutting Edge Rural Sport 2011 experience brings the country to Wellington City with wood chopping, sheep dog trialing and top Kiwi shearers in a shearing competition.

Head down to Waitangi Park on the Wellington Waterfront on Saturday 1st October for a sheep dog trialing competition.

Sheep dog trials are a test of the bond between the farmer and their 'best friend' — the working dog. The pair's stock-handling skills are put to the test with a series of challenges which usually involve manoeuvring a flock of wily sheep around a course and into a pen.

Then, top axemen will go head to head in an exciting wood chopping competition at Frank Kitts Park. The event features previous World Champion axeman New Zealander David Bolstad and three other top ranked axemen in an exciting demonstration of the sport. The woodchips will fly as logs are chopped and sawn at a fantastic pace.

The top eight axemen in the world are all Australasians, including Kiwis Jason Wynyard and David Bolstad, who between them have won the World Championships for the past 15 years.

On Sunday 2nd October an exciting speed shear competition featuring some of New Zealand's top shearers takes place in Frank Kitts Park. Participants will include David Fagan — a shearing legend who has won the World Championships and New Zealand Championships a record number of times; Rowland Smith — the New Zealand Champion; Cam Ferguson — the current World Champion and Dion King last years World Champion runner-up.

Champion shearers are recognised as world-class athletes. The physically demanding farming task of shearing sheep has become an elite competitive sport where shearers work to remove the fleece from the sheep at breathtaking speed.

Don't miss the opportunity to watch some of New Zealand's top rural sports athletes in three exciting invitational competitions — right on the beautiful Wellington Waterfront.
