Join in the fun of the Rugby, Haka, Hāngī Festival at the Carterton Rugby Club in the Wairarapa as the locals treat visitors to a friendly game of rugby, lessons in how to do the haka and some traditional Māori food.

This will be a wonderful chance to meet and interact with local rugby fans and to learn about the real people at the grassroots of rugby in New Zealand.

Come take us on!
Welcome to the home of All Black legend Brian Lochore. The Wairarapa Bush Rugby Union and Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi are proud to invite players, teams and supporters from around the world to take us on, in an unforgettable experience both on and off the pitch in this festival of friendship in the beautiful Wairarapa region.

We'll organise rugby matches against our local club teams suitable for all skill levels. There’s workshops for those new to the game and tips to improve knowledge, ability and rugby skills. We’ll even lend gear to anyone keen to suit up.

The festival takes place at the home ground of Carterton Rugby Club, founded in 1900, the club is proud to have produced four All Blacks. As an added bonus you'll enjoy Wairarapa-Bush versus Poverty Bay in their Heartland provincial rugby game following your soirēe on the pitch!

Culture
As part of the festival we’ll teach you a haka (war dance), share our tribal Māori culture of the local iwi, Ngāti Kahungunu and Rangitāne and show you how to prepare a traditional hangi (food cooked in the ground in a traditional Māori way) for the celebratory dinner in the evening.

Festival & Entertainment
The whole town is expected to come along to this friendly get together and you’ll experience first hand the best of local entertainment, food, locally produced world class wine and country hospitality. You'll enjoy tuna (eel), a local delicacy caught fresh that day from Lake Wairarapa.

The event will be the first Rugby, Haka, Hāngī Festival in a series of events hosted by five Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa towns in the Ngāti Kahungunu Rohe (tribal area) during Rugby World Cup 2011.

The Rugby, Haka, Hangi Festival in Carterton is presented as a part of the Wairarapa Spring and Rugby Festival – a rich array of arts, sports and entertainment events in the Wairarapa showcasing heartland New Zealand during Rugby World Cup 2011.
