Flogging Off The Family Silver – the Degradation of New Zealand’s Natural Capital, with Dr Mike Joy, Senior Lecturer in Environmental Science/Ecology.

Mike will discuss the recent debate around the reality of New Zealand's "100% pure clean green image". Almost all measures of the state of the environment are in decline and this is mirrored by an escalation in the number of species listed as threatened. NZ has 2788 species on this list.

The dominance of economic rather than ecological goals for government has meant that the role of environmental protection has fallen to over-stressed NGOs, non-government organisation, and individuals. Sadly, the economic advantage is always with the exploiter. There is a never-ending, well-resourced queue, lining up to take advantage of limited resources leading to environmental degradation that can best be described as death by a thousand cuts.

The reality is that we are far from clean and green, and getting less deserving of that image every day. While other 'developed countries' are improving, we are getting worse mainly driven by intensification of dairy farming.
