Sam Te Tau is tangata whenua from Wairarapa, currently residing in Palmerston North. After a formal art education at Meadowbank Technical college in N.S.W, he majored in painting and printmaking at Nepean CAE, Sydney. Sam returned to the Wairarapa to immerse himself in his indigenous roots. His painting career spans the past thirty years with solo and group exhibitions in New Zealand and Australia.

“I have always been impressed with renaissance artists along with the abstract expressionist movement. In this exhibition I am exploring Maori spirituality and symbolism.

‘Te Tau o te Rangi’ is the title of this display and the name of Sam’s ancestor from whence his family name derives. It literally means ‘the silver thread that connects this world to the spirit realm. A central theme is the journey of ’Tane Nui a Rangi’ though he also includes aspects of his personal life.

These highly detailed images are far from Sam’s loose and expressive style from student days. Currently a student of Whakairo (carving) he is drawing and carving with paint to create subtle but dynamic forms that, as quoted by a former tutor, ‘seem to be invoking some spiritual quest’.
