Proud people and places or just more Riff Raff? The spatial politics of Gay Pride.

Gay pride parades and festivals celebrate gender and sexual diversity by including, for example, drag queens, dykes on bikes, leather bears, fa’a fafine, buff boys, marching girls, gay parents with their kids, gay and lesbian secondary school students, takatāpui, and many more. These ‘queer’ bodies challenge the everyday (often unnoticed) heterosexual spaces of cities. Yet, who feels ‘in place’ or ‘out of place’ during gay pride festivals? Professor Lynda Johnston will focus on contemporary expressions of gay pride – in Hamilton and internationally – to illustrate the links between place and sexual identities.

The audience is encouraged to ’dress fabulously’.
