An evening with...

The String Contingent (Aus)
Tattletale Saints
Alex & BB

Come along to The Vic Theatre to experience a smorgasbord of some of Auckland's burgeoning talent in new acoustic music, with special guests from Australia, The String Contingent.

It rarely happens that artists of this ilk and calibre convene under the same roof, to share their music with you - with influences from all corners of the globe, it would be difficult to categorise the evening into one genre. The common theme running through these line-up is their virtuosity, vitality, and vibrancy with which they perform their music...

Virtuosic instrumental trio The String Contingent compose and perform music of sparkling beauty and originality that explores the full spectrum of musical expression. Australians Chris Stone (violin) and Holly Downes (double bass) with Scotsman Graham McLeod (guitar) integrate disparate musical styles through their own refined acoustic sensibilities.

Beyondsemble is a fresh new band playing some of the most exciting, energetic and enchanting acoustic music to come out of NZ in recent times. Specialising in diversity and with a strong improvisational edge, their repertoire covers a vast scope of styles including bluegrass, gypsy, Eastern European, Latin, tango, pop, jazz, swing, rocksteady and Celtic music

Formally Her Make Believe Band, Tattletale Saints is a “masterful blend of Americana fused with jazz, soul and pop”.

Uncut Magazine UK described songwriter/vocalist/guitarist Cy Winstanley as “a potent songwriter with a voice gently reminiscent of Paul Simon” while vocalist/bassist Vanessa McGowan “adds beguiling harmonies”.

Alex & BB are all about banjos, and what to do with an instrument that's got a reputation for duelling, and sitting on the back porch. NZ Musician Magazine sums them up perfectly: “They work together so well it’s almost like hearing one 9-string banjo played by a four-handed banjo demon”. Expect a new take on an old icon!

“This event is about celebrating several communities,” says Alex Borwick. “The opportunity to use such a beautiful venue such as The Vic is a rare one, and to have such an event on our doorstep in Devonport is a great chance to see some world-class acts in a genre of music which we don't hear enough of around here. The bands invited to play at this concert is a community within itself, all the musicians are interconnected through various projects, and have a strong history of working together.”

Doors at 7pm, show starts 7.30pm.
