Andrew Ross spent much of 2010 living in Invercargill (while his partner Deborah Barton was the Southland Museum & Art Gallery's artist in residence). Between tramping trips, he took rather a lot of very fine photographs, a selection of which are presented here.

Andrew Ross works in black & white, using a large format (8"x10") camera, and hand-processes his own sheet film. His contact prints, made from the large negatives, reveal the most subtle tonalities and details of the scene photographed, and each print has unique qualities. His working method (and probably his reasons for photographing) are somewhat akin to Laurence Aberhart's, so if you enjoy Aberhart's photographs, you will probably love Andrew Ross's.

Andrew Ross has been showing at Photospace Gallery since 1998. He had the third exhibition in the Wellington gallery, and has become its cornerstone exhibitor. More recently, he has photographed and exhibited at both ends of the country. Some highlights have been the publication of his book 'Fiat Lux' (Photospace/VUP) in 2008 and his retrospective exhibition 'I last saw you there', curated by Abby Cunnane for the Hirschfeld Gallery, Wellington City Gallery, in 2011.
