Local float-plane pilot and ex-military pilot Angela Swann-Cronin will exhibit for the first time in Rotorua, a series of paintings called ‘Nga Porohita’ – The Circles.

After 13 years service to the RNZAF Angela returned to her home town 2 years ago to focus on whanau, te reo Maori and painting; although she still indulges her love of aviation by flying part-time scenic flights for Volcanic Air Safaris.

From her small farmhouse in Tikitere, Angela produces large abstract and scenic oil paintings on canvas. She recently had a work selected to appear in the Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Award in Whakatane. She has been painting all of her life and says this new venture into the business of art is very much a ‘leap of faith’.

Angela is the first woman of Maori descent to become a pilot in the RNZAF and has made guest speaking appearances throughout the north island. She is passionate about delivering a message that emphasises ‘anything is possible if you put your mind to it’.

Angela Swann-Cronin’s exhibition Nga Porohita is supported by the Rororua Arts Village (RAVE) and will be opening 2nd March for one month. The theme she is presenting exemplifies Angela’s adoration of the ‘circle’ as both a metaphor in life and a study in mathematics. As a current student of full-time te reo Maori  Angela says: “This is just the beginning for me – I can see my journey through a year of full-immersion te reo Maori is going to further enhance my paintings – I’m very excited!”
