Dunedin's premiere cabaret producer presents...

If you are in Dunedin 8 - 10 March, do not miss Ad Hoc Productions’ "Cab Sav 2: Nostalgia & the Art of Longing". From the team that brought you the hugely popular "Cab Sav: A Savvy Cabaret" comes the newly-devised contemporary cabaret-theatre show that mixes the genres, as it gives a bow to 1930s Berlin, a nudge to the golden jazz age, a sly wink to tango and a nod to popular music. Ad Hoc Productions harnesses a rare mix of Dunedin-based performers, as it blends live music, song, dance, original comedy and puppetry to present an offbeat and magical cabaret that will offer vibrant conviviality, and some pre-autumnal contemplation for its 3-show season.

“Thanks so much for the fantastic night... best show I have been to in ages!”

Savvy, sassy and highly entertaining, this second cabaret production presents a bigger band and dance ensemble than the highly successful “Cab Sav: A Savvy Cabaret” at the Globe Theatre in July 2011. Cab Sav 2 meditates on the nostalgic, our yearnings and the quirky, and combines an exquisite tension of the romantic, the absurd, the dark, the irreverent, and the hilarious that will take its audience on an eclectic ride through the sublime, the mysterious, and the ridiculous. Cab Sav 2 interprets a fresh line-up of songs, with new dances performed to live music, and new skits. Where Bob Fosse meets Lindy Hop and Pina Bausch, where Kurt Weill meets Billie Holiday and Tom Waits, and where couture meets The Op Shop; there will be something in the show for everyone.

“The subjects explored are as diverse as the variety of performers, serving up topical puppetry, sultry gender challenging dance through to powerful singing and lyrical theatre pieces. The show hangs together through a fearless risk taking authenticity.” - about “Cab Sav: A Savvy Cabaret”.

It’s the latest offering by Artistic Director Karin Reid, and the second large-scale production under performing arts initiative Ad Hoc Productions. For this premiere season, the project has attracted a total of 15 exciting and eclectic mix of performers. The theatrical vocal textures of Karin Reid are hung together by the musical virtuosity of jazz pianist Will Martin (Resonance Trio), double bassist Craig Sinclair (Philtre), violinist Anna Bowen (Footspa) and drummer Kevin Finigan (Philtre), who render a variety of surprising and eclectic songs. We have experienced dancers Ana Martino, Lisa Wilkinson, Miriam Marler, Lizzie Hewitt and Aliza Yair, along with performance artist Sandra Muller, circo arts performer Jeff Robinson, comedians Kaitrin McMullen and Richard West and actor Kiri Beeching, making up the collaborators for 2012 ensemble.

Ad Hoc Productions will transform the unique Playhouse Theatre into an atmospheric and intimate venue for the season. While audiences mull their senses on Cab Sav’s nostalgic and provocative bouquet, they will also be able to sup on a range of wines and refreshments from the upstairs bar.
