The life and work of Margaret Mahy, the much loved children’s writer, will be celebrated at the Auckland Town Hall on Saturday.

The free event is being hosted by Storylines Children’s Literature Charitable Trust of New Zealand.

One of the organisers Dr Libby Limbrick says chapters of Margaret Mahy’s life will be told by well-known authors such as Lynley Dodd, Tessa Duder, Betty Gilderdale and Dorothy Butler.

“The event is for children, parents, teachers, librarians and all who remember her vivid imaginative stories with their wondrous words.”

Dramatised excerpts readings and songs from treasured books such as The Lion and the Meadow, The Great Piratical Rumbustification and A Summery Saturday Morning, together with recordings and videos of Margaret reading her own poems and stories will form a tribute to a great New Zealander, says Dr Limbrick.

Both children and adults are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite Margaret Mahy penned character and doors open from 2pm.

The event is sponsored by THE EDGE and supported by The University of Auckland’s Faculty of Education.
