Embrace your inner showgirl and learn the art of tasteful and glamorous striptease performance. During this 6 week course you will be taught the basics of burlesque, including history, choreography, character development, stage presence and will learn a short burlesque routine – a perfect way to impress your partner or a fun way to bond with your girlfriends and meet some new people!

Upon completing the course you have the opportunity to perform the routine with the class in upcoming local burlesque show Film Noir.

Included in the course is a burlesque themed photo shoot with Megan Bowers Photography.

Week 1 – intro to burlesque, strut & basic routine (1 hour)
Week 2 – costume layering, tasteful removal & pasties (1 hour)
Week 3 – character development & stage presence (1 hour)
Week 4 – routine practice (1 hour)
Week 5 - routine practice (1 hour)
Week 6 – dress rehearsal & show

What you get from the course:

A basic understanding of the history of burlesque and what is involved in burlesque performing. You will learn a choreographed group burlesque routine with the option of performing in a show. You also get to participate in a burlesque photo shoot and will receive a disc of images.

Week One
Monday 14th May (6.30pm-7.30pm)
Intro to burlesque - strut & basic moves

At your first class you will learn a bit about the history of burlesque. You will learn about the different types of burlesque and what is involved in a modern burlesque performance.

In this lesson we will start to learn a basic burlesque routine that we will develop over the course of the program.

Please wear comfortable clothes and bring along a pair of comfy heels. You will be provided with a pair of gloves and a feather boa.

Week Two
Monday 21st May (6.30-7.30pm)
Costume & pasties

We will discuss how to layer your costume and how to time costume removal with music. You will learn some techniques to help you remove your costume properly (without getting stuck!) and how to do this in a tasteful way. You will be shown how you can make your own pasties and will be shown how to spin your tassels! Of course tassel spinning is optional but encouraged!

You will need to provide your own costume for the dance routine. In this lesson I will let you know what costume items you will need. You will need to have your costume ready by week 4.

Week three
Monday 28th May (6.30-7.30pm)
Character development & stage presence

In this lesson we will go over burlesque character development and will work on creating your on stage persona as we continue to work on our burlesque routine. You will be taught to how to use body language, facial expression and costuming to convey your persona to your audience.

Week Four & Five
Monday 4th & 11th June (6.30pm-7.30pm)
Routine rehearsal & performance tips

Over the next 2 weeks we will be rehearsing our dance routine. You will need to bring along your own costume to each lesson.

Week 6
Final dress rehearsal & show - date to be advised

A full dress rehearsal will be held in preparation for the Film Noir show if you wish to participate.

The show is being held on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd of June.

Please note:

- The class is R18 and ladies only!
- There is an element of implied nudity involved in burlesque performing and this will be covered in the class so please be sure you are comfortable with this before starting the course!
- You will be learning a burlesque routine during this course which requires use of lingerie/costume items that you will need to provide yourself.
- A $20 deposit must be paid to secure your place in the class. The remaining course costs must be paid in full at the first class. Classes are non-refundable.
