Directed by Pamela Black, the play is based on Les Liaisons Dangereuses (The Dangerous Liaisons), a French novel by Choderlos de Laclos, first published in four volumes by Durand Neveu from March 23, 1782.

It is the story of the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, in which the scheming widow and her ex-lover make a bet regarding the corruption of a recently married woman. The Marquise challenges Valmont to seduce the virginal Cecile de Volanges before the girl can be wed. Valmont offers a more difficult counter-challenge: He bets the Marquise that he will be able to bed the very moral and very married Madame de Tourvel. If he wins, he can have his ex-lover to do with as he will. The story has been said to depict the decadence of the French aristocracy shortly before the French Revolution.

The book was composed entirely of letters written by the various characters to each other. It has been claimed to be the source of the saying "Revenge is a dish best served cold", a paraphrased translation of "La vengeance est un plat qui se mange froid" (more literally, "Revenge is a dish that is eaten cold"). However the expression does not actually occur in the original version.
