Come and celebrate the opening night of the New Zealand International Arts Festival with us at First Contact – First Night.

Bring your friends and family to experience Michael Tuffery’s First Contact at its most spectacular – with live visuals by Linechecker and music and dance from the Whitireia Performing Arts School, The Nomad, Horomona Horo, Rhombus in Dub, and Rayjah45.

About First Contact:
Acclaimed New Zealand artist Michel Tuffery transforms Te Papa into a living, moving canvas with First Contact 2012 – part of the New Zealand International Arts Festival.

‘Larger than life’ doesn’t quite do this work justice. First Contact is a giant digital artwork, projected upon Te Papa’s western wall, that brings the beauty and history of the South Pacific to Wellington.

By bringing the ‘inside out’ from Te Papa’s extensive collections, Tuffery breathes new life into historical material recorded by the Polynesian ambassador Tupaia and the scientists and artists from Captain James Cook’s three epic voyages – linking them with his own distinctive works and 21st-century visual and sound bites.

Innovative and utterly transfixing, First Contact lights up Te Papa every evening during the Festival. If you can’t make the live cultural celebrations on opening night or want to experience First Contact in all its glory again, go to the Festival website or head along to the First Contact hub outside Te Papa, where you can download a free recording of the live soundtrack.
