October film: "Rainbow Kinds" (Director: Kihachi Okamoto, 1991, 119min., PG, Cast: Tanie Kitabayashi Ken Ogata Toru Kazama).

The plan: kidnapping. The ransom: 50 million dollars. The target: Mrs. Yaganawa, the wealthiest old lady in Kitshu.

Three men, calling themselves the Rainbow Kids, and one old woman - easy money, right? Not this time. As the Rainbow Kids try to pull this stunt off, it creates an international news sensation, turning their simple plan into a media circus. It's kidnappers vs. the police in a strategic battle for Mrs. Yanagawa, using the media as the middleman.

Will the Rainbow Kids outfox the police as well as Ms. Yanagawa's powerful family? Or will a cop foil their plans and make his name on this case? Of course, there's Ms. Yanagawa herself to consider - could she be the one taking everyone on a wild ride?

Films presented by the Consulate-General of Japan in association with the University of Auckland, the University of Waikato, the Japan Foundation Sydney.

Held in Lecture Theatre L3.
