"The Hamma are Hawke's Bay's longest surviving rock band! They play a dirty, rhythm heavy, no-bull type of rock reminiscent of Motorhead, ACDC and The Datsuns, playing their own songs and their own take on classics from Jimi Hendrix to Judas Priest and The Sex Pistols.

Started in the early '80s, at the height of the classic-rock era, they earned their rock-stripes at garages and warehouses around the bay, as well as playing several gigs at the legendary Cabana in Napier to rave reviews, until the untimely death of one of the guitarists in a motorbike accident.

After a 15 year hiatus, while members went their separate ways to lead less interesting lives, they reformed in 2010, older, wiser(?) and even louder! With a new guitarist, they instantly shot to fame (well nearly) after being selected as finalists in a competition on The Rock radio station. In 2011 they started gigging again with several appearances back at The Cabana, amongst others.

In 2012, the band are heading into the studio to re-record their first album again (properly this time), and are working on new material.

If you like your rock loud, dirty and fast check The Hamma out on Facebook, or get along to the Royal in Palmy on the Friday 1st June
