Chinese-born pianist Jian Liu is to perform at the New Zealand International Piano Festival.

The New Zealand International Piano Festival (NZIPF) features seven of the world’s top pianists performing five recitals at the Concert Chamber, Auckland Town Hall, THE EDGE from 21-26 April. The festival celebrates the rich textures of the piano from steamy intensity to dreamy introspection.

Jian Liu first sprang to European attention in 1981 when he was just 16, coming second in the top-ranked Marguerite Long Piano Competition in Paris. On the basis of that success, Liu toured many European centres as a ‘wonderchild’ soloist, and a couple of years later, was the featured soloist during a gruelling US tour with the China Central Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then he has regularly toured the US, Asia, and Europe, and released more than a dozen CDs.

Jian has since moved to New Zealand and was recently appointed to the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington.

His programme for the NZIPF is hugely demanding: Liszt’s masterly transcription of the ‘Liebestod’ from Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde, and Schumann’s colourful picture-parade of ‘Carnaval’ with the sombre ‘Geistervariationen’ by Schumann, and the flamboyant Parnassus of Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B minor.

Also featuring in the New Zealand International Piano Festival are New Zealand pianists Richard Mapp and Emma Sayers; Russian-Israeli pianist Boris Giltburg; sensational Russian pianist Sofya Gulyak; and Oleg Stepanov (Latvia) and Natasha Vlassenko (Russia).

As a special feature of this year’s festival, three pianists will perform concerts in Wellington and Invercargill.

The New Zealand International Piano Festival was created in 2005 by internationally acclaimed concert pianist and Steinway artist Tamas Vesmas. His vision was to present a Piano Festival that would expose audiences to some of the world’s top concert pianists. As well as the concert series, the artists also perform special dinner concerts at Mollies, and conduct masterclasses for young New Zealand pianists.

The New Zealand International Piano Festival is proudly brought to you by Lewis Eady Ltd and the Lewis Eady Charitable Trust.
