John Coley: Double Vision - Nightlights paintings and Cut Paper Collages
14 April - 3 May 2012
Opening: Sunday 15 April 11am – 2pm

Due to a loss of vision through macular degeneration, John Coley, artist and past director of the Christchurch Art Gallery, became increasingly frustrated at being unable to enjoy the challenges, process and satisfactions of art making that had been a large part of his life for six decades. In response he began to make collages with cut coloured papers, by-passing some of the technical problems of painting.

This exhibition showcases his latest cut paper works, formal abstractions which communicate John’s pleasure in the act of art making and in colour. Alongside this work he will exhibit his earlier oil paintings ‘Nightlights’, depicting visual memories of the city at night.

This exhibition is presented by The Depot’s Cultural Icons project. Interviews with significant contributors to New Zealand’s arts and culture (including an interview with John Coley) are available online at: www.culturalicons.co.nz
