Grammy winning jazz vocalist Kurt Elling confirmed to tour New Zealand.

Rodger Fox and the Wellington Jazz Orchestra have scored another coup. In April 2012 they will be bringing the world’s foremost male jazz vocalist today, Kurt Elling, to New Zealand.

Elling has been DownBeat's Critic's Poll "Male Jazz Vocalist of the Year" for the past twelve years, and The New York Times declared “Elling is the standout male vocalist of our time.“ He is also a Grammy winner, and every record Elling has made has been Grammy nominated. His rich baritone spans four octaves and features both astonishing technique and emotional depth.

“Since the mid-1990s, no singer in jazz has been as daring, dynamic or interesting as Kurt Elling," said the Washington Post. "With his soaring vocal flights, his edgy lyrics and sense of being on a musical mission, he has come to embody the creative spirit in jazz.”

Said Rodger Fox, “We are delighted to be able to bring Kurt to New Zealand for a limited number of concerts with the Wellington Jazz Orchestra.” The confirmed concerts will be in Christchurch on the 3rd April and Wellington on the 4th April. A concert at the Tauranga Jazz Festival on 6th April has also been confirmed.

The New York Times is one of numerous publications to declare that Kurt Elling is the “standout male vocalist of our time,” and The Gate, Elling’s follow-up to his Grammy-winning Dedicated to You, is among his strongest albums—and perhaps the finest of his career.

The Gate points Elling in a new and satisfyingly emotional direction. He has somehow found a way to make a deeply personal statement out of the music of King Crimson, Joe Jackson, Stevie Wonder and the Beatles—in addition to providing a new and vibrant understanding of Miles Davis, Bill Evans and Herbie Hancock.

In addition, performing with the WJO will be special guest saxophonist Eric Marienthal. Eric was a member of the Chick Corea Elektric Band for whom he recorded six CDs—two of which won Grammys. Eric went on to perform with artists such as Elton John, Barbara Streisand, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Burt Bacharach, Aaron Neville, Dave Grusin, Lee Ritenour, The Rippingtons, Lou Rawls, David Lee Roth, B.B. King, Ramsey Louis, Patti Labelle, Olivia Newton-John, and many others.

2012 is going to be an enormous year for Rodger Fox and the Wellington Jazz Orchestra. Not only will they be touring with two of the leading jazz performers of the moment, Rodger and the WJO have an invitation to perform and record in the United States in late June. It's no ordinary recording, it’s the opportunity of a lifetime to record at the famed Capital Studios in Los Angles.

“I think this is a first for any New Zealander…and what a magical opportunity it is to be able to work at the same place as so many legends in the American recording industry,” said Fox. Legends like Louis Armstrong, Buddy Rich and Frank Sinatra—who recorded 19 of his albums at Capitol Recording Studios.

In what will most certainly be the must see gig of the year, book your tickets early for Kurt Elling, the greatest male jazz vocalist in the world today, in concert with the Rodger Fox’s Wellington Jazz Orchestra accompanied by special guest saxophonist, Eric Marienthal.
