Langafonua ‘i Oneroa (The rising of Earth in Oneroa), an exhibition of traditional and contemporary handcrafted Tongan tapa and woven ceremonial mats by Mele Saiatua Lavulo, Eniselina Vaioleti Taupeaafe, Lois Webster, Elizabeth Dana Edwards with contributions by Langafonua 'a fafine 'i Aotearoa- Ema Prescott, Ana Lavemaau, Ana Prescott.

These particular pieces of tapa are rich with stories that start from its origin as a mulberry tree fibre through to its wonderful transformation into beautiful hand painted panels of patterns and symbols which tells a unique story about the tapa creator, the artist, the purpose for its creation and the journey and life that each tapa cloth will uphold given the customary, traditional and strong religious foundations of home - The Kingdom of Tonga.

Modern day pieces of tapa cloth featured in the exhibition; represent the life of our tapa cloth artist Eniselina Vaioleti Taupeaafe and her small community of Tongan born and New Zealand born women (of Tongan ancestry) who come together to create beautiful works of art as part of an Auckland based community group (Langafonua 'a fafine 'i Aotearoa) that was established in the 1995.

Through more modern means of dye casting and preservation techniques, the women of Langafonua 'a fafine 'i Aotearoa have embraced and perfected their ancestral practice of tapa making and educate the first, second, third and fourth generations of New Zealand born Tongans of the values of tapa tradition.

All welcome to the opening at 6pm on the 9th March
