The Mid Northern Rodeo is pleased to announce that they will be hosting the Australian vs New Zealand High School Challenge. This event is highly competitive and showcases the best talent that both countries have to offer. All competitors have to be attending a high school to be eligible but in many cases also hold National titles.

The team has not been selected yet but it is hoped that Northland Cowboy Klay Lanigan from Taipa Area School will be representing New Zealand for another year.

The competition starts 6pm on Friday night with the traditional events of saddle bronc, barrel racing and the always exciting bull ride. The Mid Northern Rodeo Assn would like as many people as possible to come along and cheer for the New Zealand Cowboys and there is no gate charge for Friday night. Food and refreshments will be available all weekend.

Saturday the 7th kicks off at 10am with all the spectacular entertainment that is rodeo. The annual rodeo provides amazing entertainment with roping, barrel racing, saddle bronc, bare back riding and bull riding. Saturdays entertainment also includes Rodeo Queen and Princess where local girls see who is the best based on horsemanship, turnout, knowledge and all importantly looks.

Sunday the 8th starts at 8.30am with another go round of the amazing sport that is rodeo.

The committee of the Mid Northern Rodeo has been working hard to ensure that the grounds are in perfect condition for this auspicious occasion. The purpose-built facilities are housed on grounds owned by the club and are recognised as some of the best grounds in the country.

Bucking stock is all Northland bred. Chris McGarry from Umawera is providing the magnificent bulls. These bulls are purpose-bred for bucking off cowboys and have recently been used by the International Rodeo in Hamilton where they were ridden by cowboys from all over the world. The horses used for the saddle bronc and bareback riding events are proudly owned by the Mid Northern Rodeo club and are raring to get the cowboys off their backs.

The Mid Northern Rodeo is just one event in a circuit of over 35 across the country. The cowboys and their families travel the country competing for points and dollars in one of the most spectacular and entertaining sports there is.
