Go beyond the looking glass into the crazy world of the back-to-front and upside down! Discover the magical properties of mirrors with these fully interactive exhibits exploring the science behind reflections and reflected light.

Experiment with anamorphic art, play havoc with your reflection, peer around corners with a periscope and look into infinity with 22 hands-on exhibits as you reveal the secrets behind mirrors.

Opening Saturday 27 October, Mirror Magic experiments with mirrors of all shapes and sizes to investigate the properties of reflected light. Inspiring magicians, scientists and artists, reflections and mirrors help us make sense of the natural world, create illusions and discover more about how our world works. Owned and developed by Te Manawa Museums Trust, Palmerston North, the 22 interactive stations which make up Mirror Magic will be integrated throughout Discovery World for the summer period.

The exhibits let you explore how different numbers of mirrors in a kaleidoscope affect the image viewed through it, fit tubes and mirrors together to create your own periscope and track down the answer to a joke hidden inside a box. You’ll also get to decode distorted pictures using cylindrical mirrors and manipulate convex and concave mirrors to see a new side of yourself!
