The NBR New Zealand Opera is thrilled to launch their 2012 Opera Season with the world premiere of a ground-breaking new New Zealand work - Hōhepa. This production represents more than a decade of extensive research by composer Jenny McLeod and is based on the life of Maori chief Hōhepa Te Umuroa. The result is a warm and at times humorous opera; epic yet human at heart. Phillip Rhodes stars in the title role, alongside Jonathan Lemalu, Jenny Wollerman, Deborah Wai Kapohe, Martin Snell, Rawiri Paratene and many others.

Rightful place:
The true story of the friendship between a Maori chief and a Pakeha settler during the New Zealand Wars is told in a production of sweeping scale, as part of the New Zealand International Arts Festival. We travel from the fertile earth of the Hutt Valley and the barren brutality of a penal colony on Tasmania's Maria Island to the Whanganui River in the 1980s, on a sacred journey to reunite Hōhepa Te Umuroa with the soil of his homeland.

A powerful story and our finest operatic talent come together in this unique New Zealand opera. This is an unmissable event to add to your cultural calendar for the year.

Tickets available now through subscription at the NBR New Zealand Opera Box Office (subscription package options from $85). Single tickets on sale through Ticketek from 14 November 2011

Accompanied by players from the Vector Wellington Orchestra. Sung in English and Maori.

Presented by The NBR New Zealand Opera and the New Zealand International Arts Festival.
