Your are cordially invited to the inaugural symposium, Ngā Mana Whakairo a Toi: Celebrating Haka Excellence. The symposium is hosted by Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi: indigenous-university.

This symposium showcases haka excellence by inviting haka icons, known exponents and rising stars to wānanga, debate, offer insight, share experiences, celebrate and promote aspects of Māori performing arts; its contribution to Mātauranga Māori, Māori society and development.

It is also designed to offer a haka-centric prospective on Māori leadership; the importance of iwi festivals like Te Hui Ahurei o Tūhoe in the preservation of tribal identity in a modern society; the intricacies of waiata and haka composition in competitive and non-competitive contexts; kaitiakitanga; tikanga; the development of Ngāti Porou Haka; poi construction; kapa haka judging experiences and judging formats; haka as a platform for entrepreneurial success in business, and much more.

There are also interactive workshop discussions where participants have the opportunity to get up close and personal with kapa haka exponents to gain insight on ‘the art of composition’, ‘haka-poi’ and ‘taonga pūoro.’
