Te Kōkī, New Zealand School of Music, hosts our annual Composers Competition.

A selection panel has chosen nine works from those submitted to be performed in this concert. The student composers are currently enrolled at NZSM and the works have been composed in the last 12 months.

The 2012 finalist composers and their works are:
Sean Brennan: 'The Cheshire Cats' for clarinet duo
Immanuel Dannenbring: 'Distant' – electroacoustic
Glen Downie: 'Leah's Story' for saxophone quartet and percussion
Reuben Jelleyman: 'Soliloquy' for solo horn in F
Brad Jenkins: 'Nocturne No.1' for woodwind and string ensemble
Blake Johnston: 'Flesh' for film, digital audio and cello
Amos Mann: 'Three hares share three ears, yet each has two' for solo piano
Jason Post: 'Cataphora' for chamber quintet and live electronics
Briar Prastiti: 'Industrial Fantasia' for piano, marimba and other percussion

All nine works will be performed in this concert – the performers are a mixture of current undergraduate, and postgraduate students, alumni and local musicians. The adjudication panel this year include Dugal McKinnon (Compostion Programme Leader) and David Downes (Jack C Richards/CNZ Composer in Residence at NZSM).

Substantial cash prizes made available through the Lilburn Trust are awarded to both selected composers and student performers.

Te Kōkī, New Zealand School of Music is a joint enterprise of Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington.
