NZSM Friday Lunchtime Concert: Bartók Duos

Where: Adam Concert Room, NZSM Kelburn Campus, Victoria University, Gate 7, Kelburn Parade, Wellington

Restrictions: All Ages

Ticket Information:

  • Admission: Free

In this concert in the Friday Lunchtime Series at Te Kōkī, New Zealand School of Music, Professor Donald Maurice and Professor Claudine Bigelow will perform 13 of the 44 Violin Duos by Béla Bartók, transposing them for two violas.

Claudine is the Director of the Primrose International Viola Archive in Provo, Utah, and is Visiting Lecturer at NZSM supported by a Fullbright Scholarship.

The performance is a result of their joint research into the works and is another step towards realising a project they conceived several years ago. They have recorded all 44 duos in their viola 'incarnation' in the Adam Concert Room and the recordings, edited by NZSM Technician Roy Carr, will be released on the Tantara Record label in a collaboration with the Bartók Archive in Budapest, the Fulbright Foundation, Brigham Young University and NZSM. The recording will be based on field transcriptions and recordings made by Bartók in the early 1900s, material which has recently been made available to them by sources in Hungary, Slovakia and Austria.

The CD will also include, for the first time, the folk songs from the original field recordings that inspired the compositions.

Te Kōkī, New Zealand School of Music is a joint enterprise of Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington.
