The New Zealand String Quartet, Artists in Residence at NZSM, invite colleague Peter Scholes to join them in a performance of the Golijov Clarinet Quintet 'The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind'. The quintet is an epic piece that is redolent with Jewish history and culture; indeed, Golijov writes in the booklet that he hears its various movements in three separate languages: ancient Aramaic, colloquial Yiddish, and sacred Hebrew. While much of the five movement quintet can be described as timeless and hauntingly beautiful other sections reference a raucous klezmer dance – but the whole work is such a striking composition that clarinetist Todd Palmer has declared it the successor to Mozart and Brahms's great clarinet quintets.

Gregg Cahill, in Strings Magazine, wrote of the work: "It is a musical expression—reflecting joy and sorrow, laughter and tears—of a mystical Jewish belief in a constant state of communion in which human consciousness nurtures and renews itself through meditation. The piece deftly blends prayer and dance and leaves the listener in a state of grace that is all-too-rare in modern music."

In this concert NZSQ also complete their 25th anniversary project, the performance of the complete Beethoven String Quartets, by performing the alternate Finale from his Quartet in B Flat, opus 130 - Allegro – the only movement they didn’t include in their national tours earlier this year, and the last music Beethoven actually wrote.

Te Kōkī, New Zealand School of Music is a joint enterprise of Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington.
