Te Koki, New Zealand School of Music is delighted to welcome fortepianist Bart van Oort from The Netherlands.

In this Music Forum lecture, Bart van Oort will demonstrate the differences between the fortepiano and the modern piano and outline the consequences for actual performance.

"Much of what was notated with great care and sense for detail by composers from the classical period can be performed on the modern piano only by making some sort of translation," he says. "Having getting used to this since 1800, we may have lost some understanding of the finer points of the notation. In turn, this has led to a performance tradition that, in many ways, does not always do full justice to the original intentions of the composers. By learning from an early instrument we can get new insights in the score, in piano technique and the style in general."

After completing his modern piano degree at the Royal Conservatory at The Hague in 1983, Bart van Oort studied fortepiano with Stanley Hoogland, also at the Royal Conservatory. In 1986 he won both first prize and  the special Audience Prize at the Mozart Fortepiano Competition in Brugges, Belgium, and he subsequently studied with Malcolm Bilson at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY), receiving a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Historical Performance Practice in 1993.

He has performed at festivals in Utrecht, Florence, Berlin, Antwerp, Brugges, Melbourne, Brisbane, York, Clisson, Montpellier, Moscow, and Esterhaza, in the USA and New Zealand, has made more than fifty recordings of chamber music and solo repertory, and has given lectures and masterclasses all over the world. Bart van Oort teaches fortepiano and is a lecturer in Historical Performance Practice at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (The Netherlands).

While visiting NZSM, Bart van Oort will also present a public recital: 'Mozart's World' in the same venue and time on Wednesday 9 May. Tickets for this performance can be purchased online through Eventfinder or at the door.
